HP® Selects Starlight Networks' Video Software For New Broadcast Video Server

LAS VEGAS, March 21, 1994 -- Hewlett-Packard Company and Starlight Networks today announces that they have signed an agreement to incorporate Starlight's StarWorks(r) video networking software into HP's new broadcast video server.

HP's broadcast video server allows television broadcasters to automate their advertisement management process without compromising picture quality. Starlight's StarWorks reliably provides up to 60 megabits per second (Mbps) of streaming video and audio capacity from cost-effective HP servers. This allows the broadcast video server to handle the high-quality-picture needs of the broadcast industry, using 15 Mbps Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG) streams.

"Our customers have demanding requirements for video quality and performance,"said David B. Andersen, manager of research and development for HP's Video Communications Division. "We are very pleased to be working closely with Starlight to leverage their video networking software to better serve our customers."

"Starlight is excited about helping HP provide digital video products to the world of broadcast television," said Jim Long, president of Starlight Networks. "The Video Communications Division is in the right place at the right time to deliver complete end-user video systems to a fast-growing market. "

At NAB today, HP introduced the broadcast video server system, which provides from six to 51 hours of disk-based, broadcast quality video and audio for storage and playback. (See separate news release.) HP will market and support the complete HP video-server and StarWorks system as part of its growing product line for the broadcast and cable markets. The broadcast video server is expected to be available later this year and will be priced competitively with card technology.

Starlight Networks of Mountain View, Calif., develops video networking software to manage video traffic on enterprise networks. Starlight's StarWorks and StarWare(tm) video networking server software products provide video storage and LAN transmission management to ensure reliable delivery of video to the desktop over today's LANs. StarWorks supports all of the popular video formats and network operating systems for PC, UNIX system-based environments, and Macintosh clients.
